In February I taught a series of MoneyWays classes to a school on behalf of Diversion. During these lessons we discuss money with pupils and students, where as a peer-educator, as my position is called, I am open about my own money matters. One of the things we share with the students is our stumbling blocks, in other words, everything that does not always go well in, in this case, the financial area. One of my stumbling blocks is that I never look at my money when a band or artist announces a concert; if I want to go, I immediately buy a ticket, without looking at the money in my account. A number of students thought that was strange; why should I go to concerts when I might as well watch live streams or recordings of old concerts on the internet? Meanwhile I am actually at home watching those live streams and old concert recordings. After all, all concerts have been cancelled. I eventually followed the advice of the students.

Eenzame Schrijver, Anonieme Lezer

In februari gaf ik namens Diversion een lessenreeks MoneyWays aan een school. Tijdens deze lessen gaan we met scholieren en studenten in gesprek over geld, waar ikzelf als peer-educator, zoals mijn functie heet, open ben over mijn eigen geldzaken. Een van de dingen die we delen met de leerlingen en studenten zijn onze struikelblokken, oftewel alles wat niet altijd helemaal goed gaat op, in dit geval, financieel gebied. Een van m’n struikelblokken is dat ik nooit kijk naar mijn geld wanneer een band of artiest aan concert aankondigt; als ik wil gaan, dan koop ik meteen een ticket, zonder te kijken naar het geld op m’n rekening. Een aantal leerlingen vond dat raar; waarom zou ik naar concerten gaan als ik net zo goed livestreams of opnames van oude concerten op internet kan kijken? Inmiddels zit ik thuis daadwerkelijk die livestreams en oude concertopnames te kijken. Alle concerten zijn immers afgelast. Ik heb het advies van de leerlingen toch maar opgevolgd.

Your Paradise = Something I’ve Endured

I think it is inappropriate to immediately continue to post nice messages again after last week, as if nothing has happened at all. What would my own article from last Monday be worth then? That I pay brief attention to the anti-racism movement, but that I do nothing with it afterwards? As I wrote in that article; I don’t like to participate in anything just because everyone is doing it at the time. At the same time, I don’t want to pay too much attention to it either, because that can be counterproductive; if people read too much about a particular topic or if they come across it too often, interest slowly but surely disappears. In addition, I want this website to focus on creative freedom, without any agenda. That is why I decided that this article will be a combination of different parts, in which, on the one hand, I still want to dwell on the anti-racism movement, but on the other hand, I also want to pay attention to beautiful things in life. Because if there aren’t any beautiful things in life, then why would you fight for anything at all?

Ik vind het ongepast om na afgelopen week weer meteen verder te gaan met het vrolijk posten van leuke berichten, alsof er helemaal niks is gebeurd. Wat zou mijn eigen artikel van afgelopen maandag dan ook nog waard zijn? Dat ik kort aandacht besteed aan de antiracismebeweging, maar dat ik daar daarna niks meer mee doe? Zoals ik in dat artikel al schreef; ik houd er niet van om mee te doen aan iets omdat iedereen dat op dat moment doet. Tegelijkertijd wil ik ook weer niet te veel aandacht eraan besteden, want dat kan juist averechts werken; als mensen te veel over een bepaald onderwerp lezen of wanneer ze het te vaak tegenkomen, dan verdwijnt de interesse langzaam maar zeker. Daarnaast wil ik deze website gericht hebben op creatieve vrijheid, zonder enige agenda. Daarom heb ik besloten dat dit artikel een combinatie van verschillende onderdelen wordt, waarin ik enerzijds nog wel stil wil staan bij de antiracismebeweging, maar anderzijds juist ook weer aandacht wil besteden aan mooie dingen in het leven. Want als die er niet zijn, waarom zou je dan überhaupt ergens voor vechten?

Post-Amerika

In the past few days, I have doubted whether I would also join in sharing articles and statements about the anti-racism movement that has dominated Western media for the past week. On the one hand, it’s a very important topic that needs to be discussed and that needs to change completely. On the other hand, I personally am absolutely not a fan to suddenly go along with certain popular developments that will probably hardly be talked about in a while. I’m also not someone who regularly talks about racism. In addition, I doubt that my words will add anything to the many messages that have been shared to date. I have therefore decided to give it a try to write about it, and if you read this I have apparently been satisfied enough with the end result to share it with you.

Ik heb de afgelopen dagen getwijfeld of ik ook mee zou gaan in het delen van artikelen en uitspraken over de antiracismebeweging die de afgelopen week de westerse media heeft gedomineerd. Enerzijds is het een zeer belangrijk onderwerp waarover gesproken moet worden en waar al helemaal verandering in moet komen. Anderzijds ben ik persoonlijk absoluut geen fan om opeens mee te gaan in bepaalde populaire ontwikkelingen waar over een tijdje waarschijnlijk toch nauwelijks meer wordt gepraat. Ik ben ook niet iemand die zich regelmatig uit over racisme. Daarnaast betwijfel ik of mijn woorden überhaupt iets toevoegen aan de vele berichten die tot op heden zijn gedeeld. Ik heb daarom besloten een poging te wagen om erover te schrijven, en mocht je dit lezen dan ben ik blijkbaar tevreden genoeg geweest over het eindresultaat om het met jullie te delen.

Jus(t) a Bad Human

About a year and a half ago, I went to the House of European History in Brussels with my fellow students. In that museum, a narrative is told about the origins of Europe, in particular about the past 250 years, and the origins of the European Union. After a tour in the museum, we discussed the following statement: The House of European History is a form of European propaganda. The teachers wanted to use a critical and questionable statement. Given the slightly startled reaction of the woman from the museum who attended the debate, they had succeeded. My team had to argue in favour of the statement and I was allowed to open the debate.

Slecht(s) Mens

Ongeveer anderhalf jaar geleden ging ik met mijn studie naar het House of European History in Brussel. In dat museum wordt een narratief verteld over het ontstaan van Europa van met name de afgelopen 250 jaar en het ontstaan van de Europese Unie. Na afloop van een rondgang door het museum, gingen we debatteren over de volgende stelling: Het House of European History is een vorm van Europese propaganda. De docenten wilden een kritische en discutabele stelling gebruiken. Gezien de lichtelijk geschrokken reactie van de vrouw van het museum die het debat bijwoonde waren ze in hun opzet geslaagd. Mijn team moest voor de stelling argumenteren, en ik mocht het debat openen.
