What I sometimes wonder is; what would the world look like if everyone wore colourful clothes? When I walk through the city on a cloudy day, or when I wait on the bus with many people, I sometimes imagine what it would look like if everyone wore bright colours. Dark colours can be beautiful, but if everyone wears it, isn’t that a bit too much? Doesn’t the world look much more beautiful on cloudy days if people expressed themselves in a colourful way?

Wat ik me weleens afvraag is; hoe zou de wereld eruit zien als iedereen kleurrijke kleding zou dragen? Als ik op een grauwe dag door de stad loop, of als ik met veel mensen op de bus sta te wachten, dan beeld ik me weleens in hoe het eruit zou zien als iedereen felle kleuren zou dragen. Donkere kleuren kunnen mooi zijn, maar als iedereen het draagt, is dat dan niet te veel van het goede? Ziet er de wereld er op grauwe dagen niet veel mooier uit als mensen zich op een kleurrijke manier zouden uiten?
The Playlist that turned into a Musical Diary
Sunday 23 April 2017. On a sunny afternoon I finally decided to turn a plan that had been in my head for a while into reality. A plan to make my own playlist with all my favourite songs from all genres mixed together. The most important rule: I can only add one song per day. The song I add may be linked to what music I listened to that day, what I did or how I felt. When I told a friend about this list a while back, she made the interesting comment that it’s actually some kind of musical diary. And that musical diary celebrates its third anniversary today.
De Afspeellijst die veranderde in een Muzikaal Dagboek
Zondag 23 april 2017. Op een zonnige namiddag besloot ik eindelijk om een plan dat al een tijdje in m’n hoofd zat om te zetten in werkelijkheid. Een plan om mijn eigen afspeellijst te maken met daarin al m’n favoriete nummers van alle genres door elkaar. De belangrijkste regel: ik mag maximaal één nummer per dag toevoegen. Het nummer dat ik toevoeg kan gekoppeld zijn aan welke muziek ik die dag wel heb geluisterd, aan wat ik heb gedaan of aan hoe ik me voelde. Toen ik een tijdje terug tegen een vriendin vertelde over deze lijst, maakte ze de interessante opmerking dat het eigenlijk een soort van muzikaal dagboek is. En dat muzikale dagboek viert vandaag zijn derde verjaardag.

The Coverart Challenge
A friend recently nominated me for a challenge on Facebook to place an album cover of an album that influences my musical taste five days in a row, without giving an explanation. Unfortunately for her, I have to acknowledge that I don’t participate in social media challenges for several reasons. In order not to disappoint her completely, I decided to do something with it. The challenge got me thinking; what are in my opinion the five most beautiful album covers of albums that I have in my collection? And can I go deeper into that than just share images of it? This sounds like a new challenge.

Laatst nomineerde een vriendin mij voor een challenge op Facebook om vijf dagen op rij een albumcover te plaatsen van een album dat invloed heeft op mijn muzikale smaak, zonder daarbij een toelichting te geven. Helaas voor haar moet ik erkennen dat ik om verschillende redenen niet meedoe aan challenges op sociale media. Om haar niet volledig teleur te stellen, heb ik besloten om er wel wat mee te doen. De challenge zette me namelijk wel aan het denken; wat vind ik eigenlijk de vijf mooiste albumcovers van albums die ik in mijn collectie heb? En kan ik daar ook dieper op ingaan dan enkel afbeeldingen ervan delen? Dit klinkt als een nieuwe uitdaging.
Save Praise for a Better Man
Most of you probably know Tom Walker from his song Leave a Light On. A big hit from 2017. Tom remains mainly a one-hit wonder among the general public for the time being, and it would be a shame if he ever goes into the history books like that. I recently wrote that many people no longer buy albums, so they are no longer ‘forced’ to discover more music by the artist. For the time being this seems a bit the case with Tom Walker. That’s why I’d like to focus this time on one of my favourite songs from him, and in particular to its video clip.

De meesten van jullie kennen Tom Walker waarschijnlijk van zijn nummer Leave a Light On. Een grote hit die alweer dateert van 2017. Voorlopig blijft Tom bij het grote publiek voornamelijk een one-hit-wonder, en het zou zeer jammer zijn als hij ooit zo de geschiedenisboeken in zal gaan. Laatst schreef ik dat veel mensen geen albums meer kopen, waardoor ze niet meer ‘gedwongen’ worden om meer muziek van de artiest te ontdekken. Vooralsnog lijkt dit bij Tom Walker ook een beetje het geval. Daarom schenk ik vandaag graag aandacht aan een van mijn favoriete nummers van hem, en in het bijzonder aan de videoclip ervan.
A Study in Pink
The past few weeks I watched the Sherlock Holmes series with Benedict Cumberbatch. I had already seen a number of episodes in the past, and at the time I was quite impressed. Now that I’ve watched all episodes of the first three seasons, of which there are unfortunately only nine, I’m even more impressed. The way he observes and deduces is impressive, and at the same time shows my own flawed skills in it. By the way, I’m also curious how good your skills are.
